As we approach the end of summer, a second wave of baby squirrels are filling up our baby mammal nursery. Eastern gray squirrels make up the majority of the orphaned squirrels in our area, but we have some chipmunks as well. We will see Douglas's squirrels and perhaps even some Northern Flying Squirrels too before the season is over.
If you find orphaned baby squirrels, sometimes they can be re-nested. When they are not injured, often mom will come and collect them from the base of the tree. Please DO NOT attempt to rehab orphaned squirrels yourself. It is critical that they get the proper foods, and caging at the proper time. We have a series of cages that these babies transition through so they can learn to be wild squirrels.
Every year we get some squirrels that people kept too long. These young squirrels come in with calcium deficiencies, mange, are often too fat or too thin from improper diets, and a myriad of other things. We are here 7 days a week, from 8 am to 7pm to accept orphaned and injured wildlife. Please help us by helping these animals get to our facility or another nearer to you ASAP. Status - released.
