Anna's Hummingbird - yes, a hummingbird in January. We see a fair number of hummingbirds in the winter. There is a resident population of these little birds in our area now. Sadly, in cold weather they often end up in a state of turpor (body temperature drops and they end up in kind of an odd state of hibernation) and we believe that is what happened to this bird. She was caught by a cat and brought into a house in Lake Stevens. Cat attacks don't usually end well with species this tiny - but, this little one seems to be in good condition - as you can see from the video of her flying around her cage. She is receiving some antibiotics to prevent any infection that the cat may have caused, and we hope to be able to release her soon. Status – released.
