Every day new patients arrive at our facility. We see over 3,000 patients annually. Over 135 different species come to us for care. In an effort to tell their stories of survival and highlight the diverse number of species that we rehabilitate, we try to share some of their stories here. Baby Great-horned owl - this adorable little one is our 1st baby of the season!! It came to us as a transfer from South Sound in Kent, WA. Our center has a surrogate Great horned owl and every year she raises orphaned owlets. This baby was displaced from its nest in the wind storm on 3/13. The other facility tried to find the nest and re-nest the baby with mom, but after a week - that just was not successful. They knew we had a surrogate - and Athena will be happy to do the work rehabbing this baby for us. She has raised many babies over the past 20 years she has been at Sarvey Wildlife. The baby is about 2 weeks old now and we will wait until it is a bit older before we put it in with Athena to foster. Watch VIDEO of the owl being fed. Status - euthanized. Sadly, once the owlet was here it was discovered that it had a fractured leg. Complications developed and after consulting with raptor specialists and our vet, we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize this baby owl. The leg would never heal properly to allow it to be released.
